Horrific Conditions

Before i begin with my message ... I will let these pictures speak for themselvs...How can we let this happen.... If you think Ignorance is Bliss.... Think of yourself as informed!

READ THE FACTS

I have chosen to concentrate my efforts on the the following 6 countries of southern africa and the horrific conditions that the poeople here are living in: Angoloa, Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

1) up to 14 million people in these countries are at risk for starvation, half of which are children

2) 1 in ever 4 people in the productive age group of (15-49) is living in HIV, thus leaving the weaker people such as children, elderly, and women to support the population

3)HIV / AIDS infects around 800,000 children in Africa every year

4) Today, 3 million children live with AIDS and over 13 million have been orphaned by AIDS, most of whom live in sub-saharan Africa

5) About 4 million children in these 6 countires have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS and by 2005 that number will be around 5 million

..... THINK ABOUT IT.... we can do something to help...

The Peace Corps and Unicef

Why did i mention the peace corps, and Unicef in the links and other articles on this blog. Well it is simple. These are two the organizations which i feel are doing the most in the most productive manner to help the horrible conditions which excist today in Africa, especially Sub- Saharan africa like the 6 countries that i listed before. But what are These two organizations doing:

1) attempts to keep kids in school, thus freeing them from exploitation and abuse, and increases their chances fo aquire positive knowledge that can help in the long run
2) provide HIV/AIDS education for all, and provide as much medical care as possible
3) Identify child - headed houses
4)Meeting the food deficits in the countries and improving Nutrition
5)Providing basic disease immunizations
6) providing clean water and better sanitation conditions
7) Increasing technological support and economic growth

These are just some of the many things that organization like UNICEF and the Peace Corps do to help the world cope with the existing Pandemics. UNICEF as applead for 27 million dollars to respond to the world crisis but has only recieved some 5 million dollars to date.

it is important to note all the interpersonal contact and intangible growth that volunteers gain and provide these poor and desperate humans. Something that can only be gained through helping or experience first hand.

Some of the Finer moments

IMAGINE SEEING AND EXPERIACING THESE MOMENTS FIRST HAND.... WHAT DO YOU THINK?????

The Facts

These are just a few facts which communicate the desperate need for you help.... While we (the students of denizen, living in the industrialized world) and thus are blind to the pandemic of child poverty - it exists....

Despite global gains in child survival since 1990, 11 million children still die needlessly each year

the common illness's – acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, malaria, measles –
and others are due to indirect causes such as confl ict, marginalization and HIV/AIDS. Malnutrition and the lack of safe water and sanitation contribute to more than half of these deaths.

A child’s chance of survival differs sharply depending on where they are born. In 2002, 7 of every 1,000 children in industrialized countries died before they were five. At the other extreme, in sub-Saharan Africa, 174 of every 1,000 children died before celebrating their fifthbirthday. In South Asia, 97 of 1,000 children died before they were fi ve.

Thought about Grad School... heres an interesting possibility.

" Peace Corps or graduate school? Two unique programs offer the best of both worlds.
Peace Corps has established partnerships with colleges and universities across the United States that offer academic credit and financial incentives to Volunteers during or after Peace Corps service. Master's International allows you to incorporate Peace Corps service into a master's degree program at more than 40 colleges and universities. And our Fellows/USA program offers returned Volunteers scholarships or reduced tuition at more than 30 participating schools "

- Check out this site if your are at all interested:

How far would you go to help someone?
woudl you go to the end of your driveway
would you cross a street
would you cross an ocean
to a place 6000 miles from home
and how long would you go
for a week, month, a year,
would you go for two years
would you go if you could use your knowlege to teach someone
and in the process maybe learn something yourself
like is calling, how far will you go?

- These are the words of a peace corps advertisement as seen here at this link http://www.peacecorps.com/index.cfm?shell=learn.whatispc.psaShowVideo&vd=psaE&bwd=whbe-
think about the possibilites and the options that these words give you?
If this video... or words recited above mean anything or evoke an emotion... think about the what you can do to get involved... ALL FOR NOW

LIFE IS CALLING, HOW FAR WILL YOU GO?

Just this past summer, while camping in a rural lake filled area of Ontario Canada i met perhaps the one most culturally aware and motivated of characters. Just a few years my senior, Julie (ill call her, for the sake of anonymity) a just graduated student from the University of Ottowa (http://www.uottawa.ca/welcome.html), introduced me to the idea of the Peace Corps. While i had heard of the organization, i had never given it more than a few seconds of brain time. After explaining to me how she was planning on buying a one way ticket to Taiwan, to teach english to the underprivillaged kids in just a few moment, in just a few weeks once her summer job had terminated i felt inspired to contribute what i could, or at a minum become more educated on the ways in which i could help and inspired others as Julie had to me.
For starters here is the peacecorps website....www.peacecorps.com, with endless links, this website is more than comprehsive and inspiring.... ALL FOR NOW...
"Life is calling....How far will you go."

Imagine seeing this outside your window when you wake up......its possible
